Used Motor Oil,
Oil Filters & Anti-Freeze Site
- Just one
gallon of used motor oil has the potential to contaminate
up to one million gallons of drinking water.
Additionally, used oil that ends
up in the County's rivers, lakes, and streams can threaten
aquatic life.
Citrus
County provides to homeowners free recycling for up to 10 gallons or 60 lbs.
per visit during all hours of operation at "Recycle Alley".
Used oil that is properly handled
can be re-refined into lubricants, processed into fuel oils and
used as raw materials for the refining and petrochemical industries.
Directions for proper storage
and recycling:
Never use containers that previously held household
chemicals, such as bleach, paint, gasoline, etc.
- Used Oil: After draining
the oil from your car's crankcase, pour the oil into a
clean, leakproof container with a screw-on top.
- Used Oil Filters: After
carefully removing the used filter, using a sharp tool, puncture
a hole in the dome end of the filter or through the antidrain
back valve located on the flat end of it. Place the flat end
of the punctured filter on a used oil collection container and drain
as much used oil as possible out of the filter. (12 hours or
more for best results) Store in clean leakproof container.
- Used Anti-Freeze: After
carefully removing, store in a clean leakproof container. Make
sure that the container has a secure lid so it cannot spill.
If you are unable to take the materials
to a recycling center immediately, clearly label and keep out
of the reach of children and pets.
Used Batteries
Citrus
County provides free recycling for Lead Acid (Automotive) and
Rechargeable (Nickel Cadmium and cordless power packs) batteries
during all hours of operation at "Recycle Alley".
Fluorescent Lamps and Mercury
Containing Devices
Citrus County will provide free recycling
for these items at the Central Landfill "Recycle Alley"
(during all hours of operation) to homeowners and businesses generating
less than 10 lamps per month. Businesses generating more than
10 lamps per month may recycle at the Central Landfill for a per
lamp fee, or contract with a company providing this service.
Other devices containing mercury may be thermostats-switches-thermometers.
These items will then be transported
to a reclamation facility where the mercury is reclaimed and the
other components of the lamps are recycled.
Fluorescent Lamp Recycling/Storage
Requirements
- Do not place used lamps in the
regular trash.
- Store Lamps in an area and in
a manner that will prevent them from breaking.
- Do not intentionally break or
crush lamps because mercury may be released.
If lamps are accidentally broken,
immediately store them in tightly sealed container.
Businesses should also:
- Label the lamp storage area and
each container as "Spent Mercury - containing Lamps
for Recycling."
- A business or institutional location
may accumulate and store up to 6,000 kilograms of lamps (1 kilogram
equals 4 lamps of any size) for up to 180 days if the lamps
are destined for recycling. The 180 day storage clock begins
upon the accumulation of 100 kilograms (400 lamps).
