The Citrus County Water Resources administration offices have moved from the county’s maintenance complex to the Lecanto Government Building.

The Department of Water Resources is dedicated to provide safe drinking water and to receive and treat wastewater in full compliance with local, regional, state and federal requirements to ensure that Citrus County waters are used wisely while also providing for its protection from contamination.

During the past year, we grew by over 165% largely through the acquisition of the former Florida Governmental Utility Authority Systems in the County. We now serve approximately 47,000 citizens, or about 35% of the County with either potable water, wastewater treatment, or both. We are continuing to expand service with priority being given to extension of utility services in the fragile environmental areas along our west coast. Also, we are targeting the removal of small, old and inefficient package wastewater treatment plants with at least three more to be removed from service during the 2008 fiscal year.

In addition, Water Resources Department is working with the Southwest Florida Water Management District on a multi-year countywide assessment to identify the infrastructure needed to control, capture and treat storm water runoff. This is required to meet national clean water runoff. This is required to meet national clean water standards. We are working toward initial implementation in 2011.
